Glaucoma is an eye disease that is caused by excessive internal eye pressure. There are two types: open-angle and angle-closure. All glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye that originates from an imbalance between production and draining of the fluid. Open-angle glaucoma, which is also known as wide-angle glaucoma, refers to the most common form, in which your eye and its structures look normal and the fluid does not flow as it should. The less common form is angle-closure (or narrow-angle) glaucoma. In this type, the imbalance in fluid drainage to fluid production can be traced back to the angle between your iris and cornea being too narrow. Regardless of which type, it will be diagnosed by our Evanston Spectera eye doctor in the same way: through use of tonometry, a test that measures internal eye pressure, and other tests as needed to confirm.

Glaucoma typically does not present any symptoms in its early stages and this is why it is so important to have a yearly eye exam. Our Evanston Spectera eye doctor will screen you for glaucoma, in addition to other common eye diseases. The sooner your glaucoma is diagnosed, the less likely it will be to lead to eye damage. Symptoms may show up when glaucoma progresses and these include loss of vision, eye redness, tunnel vision, seeing halos surrounding light, pain in your eyes, and hazy vision. Also, nausea and vomiting in conjunction with one or more of the other symptoms. Treatments range from eye drops to reduce fluid production to laser surgery and even microsurgery. With timely diagnosis, glaucoma, either wide-angle or narrow-angle, is manageable and should not be the cause for any undue anxiety.
